Jordan Brand will celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the Air Jordan 7 in 2027, which means we will see some original colorways return. Building upon the early, yet impressive lineup, the “Playoffs” Air Jordan 7 will return. The pair is also known as “Charcoal” and “Raptors.” However, the latter nickname came upon the release of the 2002 pair.

While some call the shoes “Raptors,” the original pair was released in 1992, and at the time, the Toronto Raptors were not a team. The franchise was formed in 1995. Over time, the Black, Red, and Purple palette earned the nickname “Raptors” for its resemblance to the Toronto Raptors’ early team colors.

Air Jordan 7 Playoffs History

The shoes were first released in 1992. Michael Jordan wore this pair during the 1992 playoffs. As for popular moments, in Game 1 of the 1992 NBA Finals against the Portland Trailblazers, MJ hit “The Shrug” after he hit six three-pointers in the first half. In 2002, Jordan Brand thought it was time for a retro, but the public had other plans. The shoes would sit on shelves and could be purchased well beyond the original release date, even at a discount. The last time the colorway was released was in 2012, but this time around, people wanted them, and they sold better.

2027 Release

This Air Jordan 7 is the traditional Black, Dark Charcoal, and True Red color combination. A premium Black durabuck upper leads the way, with a contrasting Dark Charcoal neoprene tongue and pops of True Red on the tongue branding and collar. The midsole carries the signature red and club purple color combination, staying true to what made the original so special. The colorful geometric detailing, inspired by West African Tribal culture, appears throughout the upper, giving this pair its signature look. The “23” arrow design on the heel rounds everything out just as it did back in 1992.

Bottom Line

The return of the Air Jordan 7 “Playoffs” feels more like a reset than a comeback. It’s a reminder of a colorway that’s always been solid, just not always available, and that alone is enough to get people paying attention again.
