Jordan Brand’s Spring 2027 collection keeps getting better, and we have another classic dropping. You can now add the “Obsidian” Air Jordan 12 to the lineup. An original colorway, the Air Jordan 12 debuted this color option back in 1997 during Michael Jordan’s historic 1996-97 Championship season.

The colorway draws unofficial inspiration from Jordan’s alma mater, the University of North Carolina, and leans into a navy-and-white palette that nods to his college roots. Aside from the “Flu Game” and “Taxi,” the Air Jordan 12 “Obsidian” is quietly one of the most respected colorways in the entire lineup.

Air Jordan 12 Obsidian History

The “Obsidian” Air Jordan 12 was one of five original colorways and the only pair that didn’t match the Chicago Bulls’ uniforms, so Jordan never wore it in a game. As mentioned, the original release occurred in 1997. However, the shoes were re-released only in 2012. We would see a low-top iteration debut in 2004, but it isn’t considered an original.

What you can expect with this Air Jordan 12 is the traditional Obsidian, University Blue, White, and French Blue color combination. The pair features full-grain leather and White pebbled mudguards, with Metallic Silver accents on the lace loops at the collar. University Blue Jumpman appears on the outsole and is stitched into the tongue, while on the heel tab, the traditional Jordan branding hangs vertically above a 23 imprinted into White rubber. Lastly, it features a ribbed design on the upper inspired by Japan’s Rising Sun Flag.

Bottom Line

When I heard the news, I was excited about the Obsidian 12s returning. This is a colorway we haven’t seen released as often as other retros. The last time the shoes launched was in 2012. However, the shape was bad. The 2027 model will feature a better shape, which is a good thing.
